Peter Nicholson
Head of Investigations, Athletics Integrity Unit

Peter Nicholson spent time as a UK military intelligence officer in the rank of Major, latterly focused on the Former Yugoslavia, and previously in the Iraq Gulf War, ‘Desert Storm’. He spent nine years as a team leader at the UN Yugoslav Tribunal investigating war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide (incl. the Srebrenica genocide), and managed the fugitive tracking team that searched for indicted war criminals. Peter spent four years at the International Criminal Court from its inception, investigating the Lord’s Resistance Army in Uganda, and latterly the rebel forces in Democratic Republic of Congo. He spent almost two years investigating political assassinations in Lebanon, including of the former Prime Minister, as Chief of Investigations at the UN Commission in Lebanon.

He emigrated to Australia and became a citizen, working as a senior investigator at a federal agency for two years and joined the ADF Reserve Intelligence Corps, where he served for nine years. Peter lived in Pakistan for two years working on counter-terrorism and justice reform with the Pakistani Government, and afterwards for the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs in Uruzgan, Afghanistan living there for two years as the coordinator for stabilisation. In 2015/16, he spent a year investigating Islamic State crimes with teams in Syria and Iraq for a consortium of EU governments.

As an independent consultant, Peter changed tack and spent a year in 2014/15 as Vice-Chairman of the independent Investigations Commission for International Cycling in Switzerland, investigating corruption and doping in international cycling. After, he was sent by the World Anti-Doping Agency to Russia, living in Moscow for two years rebuilding the disgraced Russian Anti-Doping Agency RUSADA. In 2017, he moved to the Athletics Integrity Unit as head of its investigations and intelligence team, and continues in that role. He is also the Ethics Officer for the International Cricket Council since 2015, and from 2020 – 2023 was the senior expert to the World Athletics Russian Task Force, bringing the Russian Athletics Federation back into World Athletics. Recently Peter has been engaged by FIFA Ethics to investigate sexual abuse cases at the national federation level. When home, Peter lives in Western Australia, and holds an LLM and MBA. He is married with two grown up daughters.
